Great and Green but not Greasy, the Limpopo River forms Zimbabwe's southern border with South Africa. Beitbridge is the border town.
The following may help to avoid frustrating delays when crossing:-
- If possible avoid Sundays when officials are not working to full capacity.
- Beware of touts who offer to help for a fee. There is no guarantee that formalities would be processed any quicker.
- South African citizens do not need Zimbabwean Visas.
- Immigration. Try to secure an Arrival Form before joining the queue to hand it in.
- Motorists should produce their car insurance outside the main building together with an application in duplicate for a Temporary Import Permit.
- Customs. There should be somebody distributing blue Customs Declaration Forms.
Motorists travelling between Beitbridge and Masvingo would be advised to cover this stretch in daylight - cattle, goats, donkeys and wild wart hog graze along the verges and sometimes venture onto the road. Condition of the road is generally good. However, between Rutenga and Beitbridge the road is bad.
General Interest
Fourteen spans of road and rail-bridge measuring 1.5km.cross the Limpopo, known for its flash floods in the rainy season.
Sun-scorched and bare except for thorn-bush scrub, donkeys and goats have right-of-way as they wander on roads in search of sustenance. There are however a number of oases where garages and hotels have watered gardens.
The Beitbridge area is known for its fruit farms particularly citrus, much of which is exported (some are still operating) and it is a hunting area. |
