About Bulawayo

Zimbabwe's second largest city and capital of Matabeleland, Bulawayo is gateway to Hwange Game Reserve, Victoria Falls the eastern reaches of Lake Kariba.

The Central Business District (CBD) has retained much of it's former handsome buildings accommodating hotels, banks, specialised shops, departmental stores, restaurants and pharmacies. Wide tree-lined streets, beautiful parks and friendly people make it a city of great charm.

Coach Services. Coaches connect to and from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Harare and Victoria Falls. Termini are City Hall Car Park, Leopold Takawira Avenue/Robert Mugabe Way, Holiday Inn, Milnerton Avenue, and Fife Street opposite the Central Police Station.

Country Bus Service Terminus is on 6th Avenue extension opposite Mzilikazi Police Station. Buses leaving from here go to Harare, Mutare, Masvingo and Beit Bridge.

Omnibus Services: For northern, eastern and southern suburbs the Omnibus service departs and arrives at City Hall Terminus, Eighth Avenue, between Fife Street and Robert Mugabe Way. Timetables may be obtained there. Telephone 67172.

Air Travel. Air Zimbabwe provides a daily service to and from Bulawayo. For flight enquiries telephone: 263-4-253751

Rail Transport. Bulawayo is an important railway junction and marshalling yard. Passenger trains with a dining-car depart each evening to Victoria Falls and Harare. Contact Bulawayo Reservation Office on Tel No. 263-9-322210 for more details.

Taxis are available, and can be contacted through your hosts. Be sure to get an estimate before your trip, especially if the taxi is not metered.

Sightseeing Tours and transfers are available to all local tourist attractions and tourist resorts. Bookings can be made through Bulawayo Publicity Association, Travel or General Sales Agencies.

Car Hire. There are several firms offering self-drive and chauffeur driven options.

What to Pack: Bulawayo experiences extremes of temperature. Summers call for cool cotton-type garments, and pac-a-mac or umbrella. For winter, visitors would need substantial jerseys/track suits and garments that can be shed as the day warms up.
