Renowned for the Chinhoyi Caves. In the past it was primarily a centre serving surrounding commercial farms, it is however a convenient stop over for motorists on their way to Kariba and beyond. The BP garage in the town on the left going towards Kariba has basic, clean toilets.

Coach and Bus Services: A daily bus runs between Harare and Kariba return, stopping at Chinhoyi en route.

Road Travel: Chinhoyi is on the main, tarred Harare / Kariba road. There is also a tarred road going south between Chinhoyi and Chegutu.

WHAT TO SEE

Chinhoyi Caves Recreational Park run by Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority lies close to the main road, west of Chinhoyi town, 130 km from Harare. The caves are one of Zimbabwe's most dramatic minor tourist attractions.

The Sleeping Pool is a limestone cavern, the roof of which has collapsed to form a massive shaft 30 meters across and 45 meters deep. The Pool is crystal clear making it possible to see fish and rock formations many metres below. Divers have proved it to be 88 - 91 m deep.

A Research Group believes that the Pool is connected to an even bigger body of water because the temperature never varies from 22 degrees Celsius. It is reached by a long sloping passage through limestone rock. Due to lack of surface reflection, the impression one gains when descending is of a vivid blue light.
Dark passages in the limestone lead to other vantage points, from where both the Pool and vertical cliffs rising to a tree fringed sky may be seen. Less agile visitors would be well advised to leave exploring the dark passages to younger members of the party!
Archeologists have found traces of occupation of the caves dating back to the Stone Age.

Viewing the Chinhoyi Caves would take 2- 4 hours. There are very basic camping facilities adequate for backpacker overnight stopovers, and picnic sites nearby.
