About Kariba

The cry of the Fish Eagle, beautiful sunsets, ice-cold refreshments and balmy evenings create the magical atmosphere of Kariba. Escape from stresses and strains of the modern world and experience a corner of unspoiled Africa. See water birds about their busy lives, be surprised by the silent arrival of an elephant, witness a pride of lion surrounding its prey for a kill.

The Lake and its shores constitute Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority Recreational Park. Charara in the Charara Safari Area is base for the annual world renowned Kariba International Tiger Fishing Tournament.

Accommodation
in Kariba town and along the Lakeshore varies from safari lodges to fishing camps, some in Safari Areas, others in Communal Lands. Alternatively head onto the water in a houseboat. Wherever you stay, a guaranteed unforgettable experience awaits you.

Coach and Bus Services: Utilitarian buses run daily between Harare/Kariba and return. Harare Terminus is at Mbare Musika but more convenient stops are on Robert Mugabe Road and behind the Shereton Hotel. For enquiries tel: +263 4 611036.

Air Travel: At present, Air Zimbabwe does not service Kariba. It is possible to charter a light aircraft to Kariba town and destinations along the Lake shore where airstrips exist. For enquiries 'phone Charles Prince Airport +263-4304569.

Roads: Good, tarred roads go from Harare to Kariba, and from Gweru / Chegutu then north to join the main Harare / Kariba road at Chinhoyi.

A secondary gravel road negotiable by four-wheel drive vehicles only branches off from the tarred road to Binga going inland along the length of the Lake. A network of gravel roads lead from this to Lake Resorts.

What to Pack: Summers are hot and humid calling for light, cotton-type garments, sun glasses, high factor sun barrier cream, wide-brimmed hat and sandals and the very lightest cover-up for evenings to fend off mosquitoes. Winters are warm - the same day garments as for summer would apply, while you would need a light long-sleeved cardigan for early mornings and evenings. Malaria prophylactics and insect repellant are essential items. (See Top Tips)
