Masvingo and Great Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe's oldest town, was originally named Fort Victoria after Queen Victoria by the pioneer column which arrived there in August 1890. The Masvingo watchtower still standing is one of two which formed part of the original fort erected soon afterwards by the British South Africa Company. It was from this watchtower that a curfew bell was rung each evening at 9.00 p.m. The site is a national monument.

WHAT TO SEE

The Chapel of St Francis of Assisi 5 km from Masvingo along the road to Mutare built by Italian prisoners-of-war between 1942 and 1946. Remains of 71 fellow Italian prisoners are interred here. It is a charming little Italian style building with simulated mosaics in the apse, frescos and murals. Most of the artwork was done by a prisoner Italian civil engineer.

Serima Mission Church is off the main Harare/Masvingo Road. A good map will show the turnoff, but it is badly signposted. Local people would be able to give directions. The inside of the Church is covered with African Christian art carvings.

At Capota Mission School for the blind 20 - 25km along the Mutare Road visitors may hear the renowned choir and buy beautiful cane furniture, sisal mats and screens.
