Covers 74000 hectares, and is undeveloped by Government although a privately owned camp is established there. It is a little gem waiting to be discovered and enjoyed. It would be best to go in a 4 x 4 or cab-type vehicle.
Getting There: Distance from Harare is 160 km but allow more than average time because roads within the Safari Area are bad. Take the Enterprise Road; at 21.0 km peg turn left onto the Shamva road. The turn off is in Shamva.
General Interest: Dominant vegetation varies between beautiful Miombo woodland among granite kopjes, and Mopane and Baobab trees characteristic of low altitudes. A feature of riverine forest is the extraordinary proliferation of vines, some twisting and weaving from tree to tree. Vegetation diversity, and geographical features make Umfurudzi host to a wide variety of animals and birds. Animals include antelope, warthog, wildebeest and zebra; less common are predators, lion, leopard and hyena. Bird life ranges from raptors to water birds. The scenic Mazowe River supports hippos and crocodiles.
There are a number of rock paintings to be seen in the granite kopjes. |
