Victoria Falls & Zambezi

Victoria Falls Town spreads out from a small business centre where all services are within walking distance. These include banks, post office, fast food restaurants, shops, tour reservation offices, and Immigration office.

Transport: Air Zimbabwe flies the Harare/Victoria Falls route daily. Road transport to Victoria Falls is scarce at present - for independence car hire is available or alternatively there is an overnight train service to Bulawayo. Reserve a 1st class coupe, take your own food, liquid refreshments and bedding; in the summer a light blanket is sufficient. Monday to Thursday is quieter and marginally less expensive. From Bulawayo a good daily coach service goes to Harare via Gweru and Kadoma; it is also possible to continue the train journey to Harare.

Accommodation: A wide range to suit varying tastes and budgets awaits the visitor. The choice is yours. There are plush, luxurious 5-star hotels, friendly safari lodges, self-catering chalets, sociable back-packer lodges and camping parks.

For more see Zambezi/Victoria Falls National Parks.

Security: There are Tourism Police patrolling the airport road and roads in town.

Clothes to pack: Summer days can become extremely hot and humid, evening temperatures drop to be more comfortable. The balmy evenings allow visitors to sit outside with light cover-up garments to fend off mosquitoes. Winter days are warm enough not to need substantial clothing - garments that can be shed as the day warms up are best. Evening temperatures would call for warmer clothing. August winds tend to be chilly.

When to go: Weather is most pleasant in June and July. Temperatures are comfortable and Victoria Falls water-flow is moderate. November, December and January would be hot with a chance of rain while water flow would be at it's lowest. To experience the Victoria Falls at its most spectacular February to May are months when more than 500 000 cubic metres a minute cascade over the edge.
